Leaving the track and probably 2/3rds the way back home I suddenly realize I hadn't been paying any attention to the fuel gauge...when the engine dies (knew Id have to swap tanks on the way back as well). Well normally when that happens I can just crank it for a little bit and it fires right up. This time I ended up coasting to a stop and still not getting it to fire, crack a couple injector lines and have fuel dribbling out (obvious fuel around nuts but not gushing out). Tighten nuts try to start and no go, rinse and repeat until battery is dead, took deep cycle battery out of trailer (not enough oomph to crank engine over but charges battery slightly and by now Colorados' finest have shown up and hooked their jumper box to it as well). Long story short same story and end up having the truck towed home currently trucks sitting on the charger and Ill play with it tomorrow.
So after all that the actual questions, July 4th weekend I had a case of shut the truck off hot then 30-45min later couldn't get it to restart, cracked the lines (after 10min of searching for a wrench) and she fired right up. Last fall did IP/Injectors/Return lines/Glow Plugs (harness needs some work) and its had harder cold starts since. Am I thinking correctly that a return line could have a minor leak (electric fuel pump) which is made worse with a hot engine so when I crank shes sucking air in the return lines?
A small amount of air intrusion can act like a hot start issue... right down to the water on the pump.... That's why I am so hesistant about hot start pumps... You must have a pristine fuel system with these engines... Any way that air gets in, no matter how small, can cause an issue....
My 93 did that when the fuel heater was leaking. Hard cold starts, and hard warm starts after sitting for 15 or 20 minutes. Do you still have a fuel heater, and if so is there any fuel coming from the top of it?
BTW, I'm not disagreeing with the moron part! LOL
Just kidding P, we all do that shet every once in a while! Ran my 93 out in traffic the other day after the rear fuel gauge mysteriously stopped working, but she fired up after a little cranking. Now the fuel gauge is working again so WTF?
Let me know if there is anything I can do to help.
So after sitting on a charger all night went out this morning and she almost fired right up (took a hair longer then normal) so apparently yesterdays fun was just my hot start issue again. Going to try some new return lines and see how that works out
If your having hard HOT startes the IP is done,Pour cold water on it your getting heat soak.
From what I've read.
That sounds like a great way to get thermal shock and absolutely guarantee your IP is done (crack it). Bad idea, I think. Letting it sit for 30 minutes with your hood open would be better.
