I've been on vacation this week. But it is not a good thing.
A few weeks ago, during a "routine" mammogram, a mass was discovered in my wifes breast. Further scans, followed by a surgical biopsy, confirmed it was a tumor. She had a lumpectomy a week ago today. So my daughter and I have been taking care of her this week. Next week on Monday she starts radiation treatments, which will be the Mammosite type, so twice a day treatments for only 5 days straight.
She has been doing pretty well and recovering quickly, although having a catheter hanging out of your boob for 2 weeks isn't much fun. The catheter will be used to insert a radioactive "seed" for a few minutes at each treatment. Sometimes called "Balloon Radiation" treatment, it is a method of radiating the marginal area of the cavity left where the tumor was removed, instead of radiating the whole breast which is obviously more stressful to the body, and also requires 33 treatments over 6.5 weeks. No chemo treatment is indicated. A sentinel lymph node was also removed and tested, and was entirely negative for malignant cells.
She has everything going in her favor. It was caught early, it was a slow growing mass, and tests show that it will respond well to anti-hormone therapy. That last point being particularly important as far as the cancer returning.
It is likely that the routine mammogram literally saved her life. This tumor was too small to feel, even when the doctors know exactly where it is and the size. We won't ever think of mammograms as routine again.
Wow, thanks for sharing Bill. It makes you want to take the better half down tomorrow for her routine maintenance.
We wish her the very best in recovery.
Thanks again.
