guy i did work for owes me money from a year ago, i keep getting a dog and pony show as to why he has not paid me yet. money owed is 1300 dollars.
im thinking of asking him to give me his 1968 dodge power wagon to cover what is owed. truck runs but needs work over all.
my main question is there a way i can look up the vin number to make sure there is no interest or red flags tied to it?
some time back i was interested in purchasing it and called dmv, it has not been registered since 2003. with that info i am assuming it has fallen out of the dmv system.

If there are any liens against it (loans), he won't have the title. So I don't think you have any worry there, just require him to show you the title.
But the DMV fees are probably a deal breaker, unless he has brought them up to date. It will not be out of the DMV system after only 10 years, and the fees and penalties will almost certainly be more than the thing is worth. If you're lucky, he might have it on a non-operative status. I would bet against it though. I think you can look up the fees due on the DMV web site.
i found the paper i have the trucks info on when i called in 2010 about the dmv fees and if i remember the lady said stuff gets purged from the system after 7 or 10 years, but i could be wrong.
i know for sure its not non oped, and not all entirely sure he transferred it into his name how ever many years ago when he got it. not exactly a truck i want... but it is a Manuel transmission and transfer case and 4x4 which perk my interest.
just hate to take it to cover most of his debit to me, and get hosed on trying to get a title for it and non oped in my name.
You could just part it out if you wanted. Or even donate it to charity and write it off your taxes. Then no worries with DMV. I'm pretty sure you cannot just wait it out for 10 years, and then start fresh without penalty.
Those old Power Wagons are pretty cool.

Only thing I can think of is it limits your ability to access the bed. Can't get out of the cab, turn around and grab something fro mt he bed. Sure, you can open the back and crawl in, but for me, that is not an option. However, it does help your truck get better mpg. When asked if I wanted the cap for mine when I bought it, I said yes just for the gain in mpg.
I have always had caps on my trucks. The only reason this one doesn't is the fifthwheel hitch, so I have a rolling cover instead. The pros and cons are pretty obvious, and it comes down to how you use the truck.
