Puller question for the ZF rebuilders

How big of a bearing separator is ideal for the countershaft bearing? A snap on 4 3/8" be enough, or the bigger 6 1/2" needed? Just trying to get all the tools together to do mine and wanted to make sure I got the right stuff the first time. Thanks.

It is tough to get a traditional bearing splitter on the countershaft bearings due to the way the gears are made with an undercut. I had to cut the cage off and pull from the outer lip. And had to heat the races with a pencil torch to get them to let go of the shaft.

WOW! Looks like that puller is about to give way. Put the smoke on for sure. I guess there is a bearing guy locally that has a splitter tool that goes right in and pulls it off. I am wanting to do mine and was shopping for bearing seperators but haven't found one yet that looks like it will for sure work right. Thanks. Wait I am mistaken. I was after the main shaft bearing, the one that rides right ahead of the splines for the output shaft. It looks like that one is stubborn, but I hope to get a puller on the main shaft bearing.

Yea it wasn't the best way, but for a throw away part (bearing) and throw away tool (cheap splitter) it wasn't worth it to me to source a splitter that would work exactly. The Ford service manual calls out some OTC tools but that stuff is $$$ and why when the bearings are going to be replaced anyway?

I did basically the same thing getting the rear mainshaft bearing off. The problem with using a splitter in the traditional fashion is that the inner race is basically touching 5th gear on the mainshaft. No way I could see to get a splitter in there without damaging 5th gear teeth. The way I've shown works fine with some heat on the race.

We just used a torch to get the bearings off when we did mine.

That was what we did on the tear down of the broken case zf Saturday. It worked. The OTC tool? I will have to look this up.

Check out page 36 of the linked pdf. Step 18 calls out a "Pinion and Carrier Bearing Puller" (D81L-42240-A) to get that bearing off.

http://www.zf.com/na/content/media/u...ce_manual_.pdf

You can pick up this tool (among others) for a cool $1500.

I checked that out. It looks like the bearing separator and puller toolshould work if they aren't too stubborn. MAC and snap on both have them that will work.

I have a ZF tool kit that I bought online and never used. I believe it is the OTC tool you are referring to. It has the bearing pullers and installation tools to rebuild the ZF5. I have been holding onto it in the hopes that I would get a ZF truck, but as of now, I have no use for it. PM me about it if you want and we can talk.
