Hey guys, new to the forum here. some freat builds going on! I got a clutch issue in my 67 highboy.
Driving down to town one day, the clutch was fine. Engagement was in the Center of when pressing the clutch pedal down. By the time I got into town, I now have to nearly push the pedal right through the firewall to get it to shift(when not rev matching) I checked the linkage and it seemed fine. But I noticed that I think a bracket for where the release spring is, past the engine cross member, broke and now the spring is attached to the crossmember and binds. I don't think the clutch is going as it was shifting fine before I got into town off the highway. What do you guys think?
I'm not sure what to think... but it sounds like the return spring needs to be replaced and the linkage adjusted. Verify the pedal travel and release afterwards.
One thing it could be is the internal little tongue tag that is riveted to the inside of the bell housing that the clutch fork arm rides on. When these come loose your clutch pedal does not engage fully. Then the bell housing needs to come off to be repaired with special bolts. But could be a simple fix with a new linkage rod in the system as you do a full inspection of it..orich
Well. Nobody gave you a pic of where the spring is supposed to connect so I'll say this. The main purpose of the spring is to keep the throw out bearing off of the pressure plate when your foot is off the pedal and to keep the linkage from falling off of the fork. I'd say even if the spring is binding somewhere if it's still doing these two things that's not your problem. Please let us know what you find out.
Well this the best i could get without getting dirty.. Spring hooks to the end hold of clutch arm. The of hooks to a metal L bracket bolted to inside the frame...orich
AND THE OTHER END
Took a look. Everything seemed fine in the bell housing. The problem ended up bein just needing adjustment. I'm gonna guess the adjuster but backed off.. Thanks for the photos. I'll make that bracket at work tomorrow.
The clutch adjustment rod is composed of two parts. Threaded rod and pointed extension.
The extension isn't threaded, it slips over the threads of the rod and is double nutted in place.
Clutch wears, sooner or later the extension can fall off the rod onto the road.
Notice the 7521 clutch release rod in parts catalog pics. Attaches to clutch pedal bellcrank (7A554) then to equalizer bar (7528).
Rod has 90 degree ends using nylon bushings (7526). The bushings crack apart/disintigrate, the 90 degree ends begin to crack, eventually snap off. Not pleasant!
