My water pump went out during Pittsburgh's rush hour. I limped over to my sons house and saw that I was leaking fluid rapidly. I did manage to get home but needed to stop ever few miles to add more water. The temp gauge never went to hot. Yesterday I rented the tool from Advance but none of them fit. I used my digital calipers and found that the fan nut was 48 mm or 1.88 inches. The larger one was 58mm or 2.15 inches . I had to fabricate the 2 wrenches from 1/4" steel plate. They worked quite well. After the fan and the fan shroud was removed it was just a matter of carefully removing the old parts and replacing the water pump. I did get a new thermostat gasket after I removed the housing. I refilled the radiator and tried to make sure that there is no air trapped in the system. Today I heard the bearings on the idler pulley making noise. I guess the antifreeze bath must have washed out all of the grease. Now I have another project for next week.
The pulleys are making noise after the antifreeze bath. I thought it was the alternator bearings but when I sprayed the pulleys with WD40 the noise went away. When I rev the engine the bearings rattle.
