Driving down the road today, all the sudden there was a loud, high pitched rattling noise coming from the rear end... I drove home to find that the oil slinger on the rear yoke had popped off and was rattling back and forth on the shaft. It appears to be in good shape, but my question is how is this piece held on? It seems to have just popped off somehow.
The part I'm talking about is the one in the upper left hand corner in here:
Is there any good way to temporarily re-secure it to the yoke? I'm home for labor day, and don't know if I'll have the time to pull the driveshaft and yoke to press a new one on.
Do what Mike said. It won't leak. It really just keeps mud and dirt and gravel from damaging the seal. If oil gets out of it than it ain't gonna sling it back into the deff, but all over under the truck. If it ain't leaking than just cut it off till ya can get time for it.
Thanks guys, I was thinking of cutting it off but I thought it would be best to avoid that if possible... I ended up just cleaning out the surface that it's pressed on to and used JB welt do re-secure it. I expect it should hold fine until I get the time to replace it.
