Question 4x2 to 4x4 conversion?

What's the group concensus on conversion from 2wd to 4wd? I have a 95 F150 that I really like - I know it would be a tossup to convert or buy a "real" 4x4. I prefer not to drive a newer vehicle because I hate payments, and I love to work on my truck!!! (It needs me) I have seen the tech article on this, and if the conversion can be done well - indestinguishable from stock - then I'm all for it. I was thinking about buying all parts from another similar F-150 at the salvage yard (5 spd, reg cab, long bed) Will 87-96 trucks with this trans/length have the same parts? I would like a BW 1356 with a manual lever. Understand, I don't intend to do serious mudding, but I'd like to enjoy some light off roading.
I open it up to yall....
What do you think, and can anyone speak from experience?

C. Heggie

stick with 1995 up because you have bolt on front calipers that will not rattle with age. You may be able to use 1992 up. 1987-1991 are different. F150 is easier than F250 because you retain the coil spring/radius arm set up. You can trade for a 4x4 just for the price of the BW 13-56. It can run >$1000 exch. If you can find and buy a good donor go ahead. You can get ahead if you also get body parts, sensors or engine etc. I like the 1995 up especially with E4OD or ZF S5. Look out if you have AODE though.

It's totally possible, but you'll have to remove a few frame rivets to bolt on the 4WD bracketry (no big deal). The only part that's specific to wheelbase is the rear driveshaft, so you can get ANY front axle (but stick to your lug pattern and avoid '87-88 1/2-ton w/manual hubs), t-case (avoid electric shift but look for PTO), & transmission (but if you have an E4OD or 4R70W, get the same thing or have yours swapped to 4WD). The front driveshaft length has to match the transmission, but they can be cut for length at decent machine shops for ~$50.

Figure out how much that stuff will cost, and how much your time to trade it all out is worth, and then see what a 4WD truck similar to yours costs.
