Heavy White Smoke, Cylinder Contribution #1
hello all, hoping for help with 03 F350 6.0. 120k miles, new heads w/arp studs 15k miles. Recently did EGR delete and FICM atlas 40 from Ed, ran great for a few 100 miles. Had Bullydog running and on start get puff of black smoke which turns to heavy white smoke on acceleration. Pulls code P0283 cylinder 1 contribution. Replaced #1 injector from Ford. No change. Swapped injector #3 to #1 cylinder and Contribution stayed with #1. Removed harness and checked #1 to Ficm and looks great. Ficm has correct voltage. No loss of coolant. Oil smells of diesel and seems a little overfilled. Valve train looks great. No smoke from oil filler cap. No smoke and actually runs good with #1 harness removed from injector. My dealer wants 240$ for evaluation. Im guessing cracked cup on injector 1 but dont want to believe it.
Thanks to all, this site has been a great help!

Have you tried the bubble test? To perform the bubble test, remove the secondary fuel filter and with the fuel filter and filter cap removed crank the engine over using the method in this video and watch for bubbles, if you have bubbles there is a problem with the copper washers, injectors or both,

I have not tried the fuel bubble test. That is a great idea. I will get it done soon... family reunoin this weekend. I did put new crush washer when i swapped the injectors and cleaned cup real nice and made sure no oil in threads of injector hold down bolt. Also torqued to 28lbs. I cant figure why it clears up (no smoke) when the injector harness to #1 is unplugged. Is it that the injector stays closed and no fuel delivered to cylinder? And one more question...can i drive it with #1 injector harness unplugged? I sure would like to take my jetski this weekend so i dont have to sit and talk at the reunion.
thanks again

Finally had time for bubble test. No bubbles in fuel reservoir. Changed filter and water separator. Engine cranks nice and even, no highs or lows, so I hope that rules out compression issue. Haven't had chance to swap FICM. It shows good voltage from KO to running. Is there any way to check volts at the harness connector to cylinder 1? When I had the FICM out to repair I removed turbo and inspected oil cooler. They both looked good except for the oval screen in cooler. It was missing most of the screen. I replaced wit new and reassembled with rebuilt FICM. Ran great couple hundred miles. Exhaust smells heavy of fuel. Could #1 injector be stuck open? It was replaced with new and then swapped with #3. My buddy says oil cooler on it's way out?
Thanks again!

Hate to ask, but did you check in the cup for the old copper washer?
I had one injector done at a shop and a few months later when I went to re ring the rest of them I figure why not that one too. when I pulled it I found it had 2 copper washers in there. Luckily for me it did not cause any probs, but it should not have been there.

I really appreciate you guys help. I checked the bore and cleaned it out good both times. Also cleaned out the hold down bolt threads so the bolt wouldn't bottom out. Both times I put new crush washers and torqued to 28 ft/lbs. I rechecked the oil and best I can tell there is no fuel in it. It's only got maybe 2k since oil change and it looks nice and clear. I also put a drop of oil on a thick paper towel and there wasn't a ring around it, just pure oil. I have a sample I'm going to send off to be analyzed. Is there anyway the injector valve is being controlled by the FICM to stay open?
