The problem I am having is, that I notice the fuel in my clear plastic fuel filter empties out after I shut the engine down. While it's running the filter is about 90% full.
The filter will completely be drain with in about an hour. If I let the truck sit for over a week with out running it, I have to crank the engine over for a while to get it to start. I do not smell any fuel anywhere and see no leaks.
It appears that the fuel is draining back past the pump and back and maybe the fuel in the carb is evaporating also? I had to really pump the accelerator to get it to start. I did not look down the air horn to see if it was squirting fuel. But normally, I would not nearly have to pump it that much to start it.
Is there a check valve in the system some here? And should the fuel in the carb dry up. Is there and where could I install the check valve.
Mine does the same thing, randomly. Sometimes there is almost no fuel, other times it is nearly full. Last night I ran for Pizza and then went to the truck after eating to check fluid levels, especially the radiator. Pressure gauge between the pump and filter showed nearly 6 psi, yet the filter was almost empty, 45 minutes after running it. My understanding is that the fuel is not supposed to drain back past the pump. Similar situation to yours, wish I had the answer.
The fuel pump has an inlet and outlet valve. Sounds like they're leaking a little bit.
The pump looks like it has been recently replaced by the PO. Probably low bid quality. I could run the engine , shut it off and clamp off the line and see if it holds.
Any know check valve out there that could work?
You could add a check valve... a 3/8" brass valve from ACE or something more automotive oriented from Summit ect. It would be a lot cleaner and maybe not more expensive to replace the pump. It has a check valve, your's just isn't working.
