I need some help! I have done a lot of work to my '85 F150 XL. Here is a list of the things that I did:
- Changed all six freeze plugs (fixed coolant leak)
- Replaced transmission fluid and pan gasket ( fixed fluid leak)
- Replaced small section on fuel lines (Cleared up fuel system)
- Rebuilt carburetor and made adjustments according to instructions
- Replaced air filter
My issue now is that she starts right up and idles smooth. But as soon as i give her gas she bogs down. I know my vaccum system needs some work but would a bad vacuum system cause the truck to bog down? What do I need to do to get her to accelerate?
I bet you have lost a check ball somewhere or forgot to put it in. There should be a ball or some sort of check needle in the accelerator pump circuit.
To verify this, with the engine off, take the aircleaner off, and climb up into the engine compartment and while looking down the carb throat, push the throttle open. You should see two strong streams of gas shoot into the carb and down into the engine. If you don't, that's your problem.
You also could have left some linkage off somewhere. Just concentrate on the accel pump part of the carb if you do not see the streams of gas go into the engine when you move the throttle.
I would agree but it was doing this same exact thing before I rebuilt the carb. I do remember the ball you are talking about. I almost lost it during the rebuild. I have checked those streams you are talking about and they are solid.
When I apply the throttle slowly it begins to accelerate but then loses power. If i let off the gas to quickly then she dies. I have to let off slowly back to an idle.
I finally figured it out!!! Well, I can't take the credit. I called a local guy who is a family friend up who is an excellent mechanic. He looked under the hood and for a while there I was worried because he couldn't figure it out either. We checked the carb we check vacuum we checked timing and it was still bogging down. He finally resolved that I needed to take the carb off again and make sure my floats were at the correct level among other things. I was a bit discouraged but as he was walking back to his car he stopped and said that one more thing that I could check was the catylitic converter. He said sometimes they get blocked and wont let the engine breath. Well unfortunately my catylitic converters are welded on so I couldn't just disconnect the thing. So decided to disconnect the exhaust from the engine. Aside from sounding like a monster truck she didn't bog down! That was the issue! I then reattached my exhaust and cut a hole after my first converter. I know its not california legal but that fix isn't permanent. I just wanted it to run.
