transmission sensor sending unit_location
Problem_ The last couple of days my transmission temp. gauge is not working properly. Stock gauge ( I know) but when I first turn on the key in the am, truck setting overnight, waiting for the glow plug light to go out, after 2 seconds (counting 1000 one, 1000 two) the transmission gauge will jump to the mid or normal range (half way between cold and hot). Drive the truck until engine gauge is in the normal range and turn it off. Turn the key back to the on position, same thing. Everything is working fine. Trans fluid is fine, no burnt smell, fluid and filter changed about 4000 miles ago. Question is two part:
#1 Does this sound like the transmission sensor sending unit?
#2 Where is it located?

The sensor is in the solenoid pack inside the transmission. You can check the wiring harness on the right side of the transmission for damaged wires but my money is on a loose connection in the back of your instrument cluster. The '02-'03 models have been known to be a little troublesome from time to time. Some issues have been resolved by cleaning the terminals and making sure the connectors are seated properly.

No, it does not sound like a bad sensor. It sounds like normal operation to me.
The stock gauge is calibrated to go to the middle of normal when the transmission is warmer than 50°F. What you are seeing is normal for warm weather.
