Injector maintenence question
My mom and I have shared this truck since she bought it used in 1998 with 98k miles. Back then I could get 16-18 mpg on the hwy if I kept my speed around 55-60mph. With the 4.10 axle ratio that was about the fastest economical speed. Power wasn't as good as my 99 7.3 PSD but it was good enough.
Then I had to give the truck back to her. I drove it again about 6 years later and thought the power was down but at the time I had a sweet running 6.0 PSD and assumed I was just spoiled. 11 years later I have the the 93 truck back. In the last 4 years mom only put 800 miles on it. I drove the truck from CO to CA and averaged 11mpg and smelling raw fuel the whole way. Didn't seem as powerful as I remember.
Replaced the injector caps and return lines and now see 14mpg on the hwy. Power still doesn't feel right. Starts easy, idles and revs smooth, no smoke under load here at sea level unless I forget and start out in 3rd gear and then it's just a little puff of grey.
I know the injectors have never been serviced and are original. Do injectors fail by mileage only or by time also? Are there any other suspects for power and mpg loss?
I'm not seeing any excessive smoke of any color out the tailpipe.
The engine runs great and maybe my memory is foggy but I could swear it used to have more power.
