Body Shop Rates?

Truck is getting closer and closer to heading off to the body/paint shop. I have bids from a couple guys. I want to compare hourly prices to see who's giving me a fair deal. If you don't mind sharing, what have you guys paid per hour for your trucks to be painted? Thanks

$60-120/hr...but the majority of my cost is in supplies...ie paint brand, volume of said paint, primer, clear. If you can get the body as straight as possible, it should minimize any additional work the shop has to do besides just paint.

I'll be interested to see other replies as I'm also pretty close to going for paint. I haven't gotten any quotes just yet. I was trying to think of a fair way to compare prices. If you don't mind, what kind of material costs are you seeing?

I think around $70-80/hr is the standard around my parts.

I live here in Pittsburgh Pa and all of the body around here charge $48 an hour for labor. Frame and mechanical repairs are $50 an hour. However some shops offer a reduced rate for customer pay bills.

I'd say roughly 4-5k in materials...I really need to learn to paint, would be a lot cheaper. Most of my paint work comes out in the 7-8k range. Not concourse fancy...but better than 99% of the stuff out there.

4-5k just for materials....that seems steep. Since I posted I got a quote from a distant friends body/paint shop that is just opening. My truck would be their first vehicle as a company but not their first one they have ever done. They are giving me quite the deal....4-5k total all said and done. A few things they liked and is saving me some money is the time frame I am giving them and the amount of work I have already done. I told them I am in no rush to get it completed by a certain date and I have disassembled all of the body except the cab from the frame. I will be taking them the bed, tailgate, fenders, and hood first and then the cab later. I am very happy with their quote and I actually trust they will do a great job. I am also in South Western, Pa.

My other quotes ranged from 6-7.5k

I do bodywork on the side. A paint job from me is generally $2000 + materials. That price includes same color repaint, disassemble, final block sand, tape and mask, paint and clear, wet sand and buff, reassemble. Any extra work from there is added (dent repair, rust repair ect). Material are going to run from about $500-$1500 depending on color choice and paint manufacture. I use Dupont and Nason (Duponts value brand). I will shoot other brands, but it will cost more for materials.

I will give a little bit of advise. Never tell the person that there is no rush, fit it in where you can. This is where body shop horror stories begin (I call them paint Jail). I am guilty of this myself. The shop has a "fill in" job, it will ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS get pushed aside for another job. If your not in a hurry, that is fine, tell them you want it done by xx/xx/xxxx, even if its a year or more later. Shops work on deadlines, plain and simple. I have a 66 Ford Fairlane that is a "fill in" job right now, I have had it for 2 years, all that is left is to do is 1 small patch panel on the lower quarter panel and final block and its ready for paint, but there is always someone that wants a job now, so there it sits in the corner of the shop collecting dust.
