Question about rep points

I am new here and I really don't understand the "rep points". Is there a purpose to them or is it a feel good kind of thing? Thanks.

rep points are feel good kind of thing, when someone helps you and you give them rep it is an added thank you besides saying thanks in the forums.
plus when you leave rep, you can leave a private message for the person no one else sees.
