Suggestion: stop trying to shortcut, second guess or circumvent the proper procedure. Old Dan gave you the process in post #13, follow it exactly and you will be good to go, Matching up your engine to a picture of someone else's engine will not work unless your distributor was installed exactly like theirs (1/12 or 8.3% chance that's the case).
Just to be clear I am not saying install it so your rotor is pointed at 10 or 11 o clock as mine is. I am saying install it so your rotor is pointed at the casting seam - exactly 90 degrees from the retention clips when the crank #1 is at TDC (timing mark on timing indicator). Since the distributor and cap are both keyed with a notch that better line up with #1 on everyone's rig not just mine.

Ya got to understand one of our frustrations, we answer (almost) the same question 3 times a week it feels like... and a lot of the guys asking for help seem to get excited and shortcut things.
2 more posts and you can use the search feature
Ax is a very knowledgeable guy and an asset to this board (not to mention a lot more active than I and a lot better body man than I) so everybody deep breath relax and lets get this guy's motor to purr
Let us know if she is catching and trying, if she has anything else to share and yes - as many have suggested pix - we might eyeball something in the pic that you might not be seeing.
(easiest way for pix is photobucket btw)
every 226 distributor cap I have seen had the numbers on em, and with the notch key you can't put the cap on 180 off so I'll ask the dumb question - under the grit and grime are there numbers under there?
