Cause they don't know what they are doing
Axle looked like it was already separated from frame, even if it wasn't it's not the proper place to hook

It was probably already compromised but they still should have hooked to the frame.

When a tow truck driver realizes a vehicle is already totaled, they do not worry about doing more damage.

I think it was obvious that this Excursion was already totaled.

After getting past the initial shock and sadness at the death of an Ex
I found myself thinking "...gee, someone should snag those barn doors off there!" They're so hard to find, by all accounts.
