U Joint part #s
I need to replace the axle shaft u-joints on my 05 4WD Ex and I'm finding different part numbers. Has anyone done this and can provide the correct numbers for me? I need to get this done tomorrow while I do the ball joints. If someone knows the parts numbers for a Napa or autozone/advance auto equivalent I'd be much obliged. I had called autozone and was given an incorrect number (sure of this), not that i'm surprised.
Thanks!
In any case, the first place to reference what is needed is the Spicer U joint book. download the pdf and look at page 195. It can be a little confusing, but you reference the diagrams at the bottom of the page for the correct location.

It works out like this for 4WD:
FRONT AXLE: (each of the following links have more cross reference numbers on the page)
Shaft U-Joints (wheel joint, Location 1, figure 1): 5-806X(obsolete).......SPICER SPL55-4X (CURRENT)(GREASABLE)
Northern Drivetrain, LLC: Spicer SPL55-4X
Shaft U-Joints (wheel joint, Location 1, figure 1): 5-806X(obsolete).......SPICER SPL55-3x (CURRENT) (NONGREASABLE)
Northern Drivetrain, LLC: Spicer SPL55-3X
FRONT DRIVESHAFT:
Front Driveshaft (Location 2, 3 and 4, figure 1): Spicer SPL 5-178X (CURRENT)(GREASABLE)
REAR DRIVESHAFT:
(Location 5 and 6, figure1) spicer SPIL 5-160X (CURRENT)(GREASABLE)
If you ever end up getting driveshaft U joints, I advise that you measure the outside yoke width on your vehicle to ensure that these are the correct U-joints as referenced in the PDF.
Northern drivetrain is a excellent place to get U-joints. Genuine Spicer parts are really tough parts. You won't do wrong at all.
NAPA or any decent parts shop should be able to cross reference a part now that you have the correct spicer numbers
Got the info right away from my friend's phone - spent the last two days replacing everything on the front end: u-joints; unit bearings; axle seals; all tie rod/steering components....the only thing ford original is the axles and the lockouts, haha.
