I'll assume you meant replace not repair. The cost will vary across the country, however I have found that most transmission shops can pull the tranny and get at the flywheel for less money, mostly because they're better experienced at pulling the tranny out in less time.

That's not how flat rate works. If the trans R&R pays 7 hours then thats what you get charged. It doesn't matter if it takes the tech 3 hours or 10 hours you still pay the 7 hours labor. I would think a expedition trans R&R is at least 6 hours. The dealer quote sounds about right to me. Dealer's labor rates and parts prices are normally higher than independent shops.
I can bet you, that every shop has Mitchell, all data, or some other kind of labour guide that they follow for billing out hours, or at least they do here in the great white north of Canada. I’m a journeyman automotive service technician, even though I’m not paid plat rate wages, the shop I work at bills out what the labour guide says. Lots of backyard people up here, but I wouldn’t trust them with tuning up my lawnmower, let alone my vehicle. Though, I maybe wrong, I know in the states, it’s a whole different ballgame.
