Question Trailer Wiring Issue...

Hi all
I have a 2000 F250 XLT with the 7.3 psd...
I noticed after I hooked up my trailer to return from Wisconsin and I noticed the right turn signal and right brake light wer not working. Both were working on the truck itself...so I figured it had to be an issue with the trailer lighting...However, I noticed the same issue with my other trailer...so I hooked it to my Explorer and it works fine.
Logic dictates that it has to do with the wiring harness for the trailer light plug ( I have both the 4 pin and 7 pin connections )
Instead of trying to track down a crummy wire...it looks like the trailer light connection is just plugs into the wiring harness.

Has anyone else had this issue and what's the easiest way to get this thing fixed up ? I picked up a Hopkins 4 pin/7pin combination unit that claims it plugs right into the factory wiring...but it doesn't look like a direct plug in.

Suggestions ?

Thanks !

Scott

I had a similar problem this last month. As long as your truck lights are working correctly, check fuse 6, a 20amp fuse. It powers the trailer stop and turn relays.

You can/should also scuff the connector pins bright with fine sandpaper, and spray WD40 on the connections.

Good luck.

Get an ohm meter and check for continuity or voltage. You will be able to figure it out real quick.

OK...

So, I picked up a Hopkins wiring kit (#40955), figured I'd just replace the one I have since the spring-loaded weather cover was broken. It says it's an "Exact OEM Fit". However, it does not work on my truck. After a bit of poking around online I found that Ford had 2 different factory woring harnesses. One for 4 blade and a different one for 7 blade. My truck didn't come with a 7 blade (it was added by the guys that installed my 5th wheel hitch, brakes, etc.)

Anyways, I was hoping that there is an adapter so that I can use my new Hopkins kit (it has both 4 blade AND 7 blade...which I need since I pull a small trailer behind my 5th wheel as well)

Does anyone know if there is an adapter kit for this ?

Thanks !

OK
After looking into a bunch of options, I decided that my best solution will be to splice the factory pigtail to the new receptacle...which is essentially what the RV shop did originally.
I'll solder the connctions and apply heat shrink tubing to keep the moisture out. (which is why the RV shop patch job failed)

Looks to be fairly straight forward ... but my only question is: There is an ORANGE wire on the factory pigtail side. There is no orange wire on the 7 blade side.

Does anyone know what the orange wire is ?

Thanks !

Could it be a faded red? Since you have the existing 7-blade connector just match the wire, whats left would be your orange... aside from the common 4-way harness (white, brown, green, yellow) theres only 3 left being blue, Purple, and red if I remember correctly. Blue should be the brake controller, purple would be backuplights, and red would be aux power/trailer battery charge (whatever it's called, +12V)
