NEWBIE!!

Hey guys and gals, I got a question for all the mechanics out there. First ill explain what happened then ill see if anyone can help me? I was on the way home from Akron a couple weeks ago and my truck started "whining" as I was driving down the road. Nothing else just the whining, so I pulled over and checked the fluid level and smelled the fluid because I thought it was my transmission. Level was fine and fluid was redish. So I thought everything was "ok". Half way home it stopped whining and was fine for another couple weeks. Akron is about 50 miles away. Then the other day I was headed to town and all of a sudden the R's jumped up and it started to jerk around. This town is only about 10 miles away but only started about half way there. Then on the way home it was fine again til about half way then the same thing. Now my question is does my transmission need rebuilt or could it be some kind of speed sensor or something since the fluid and smell were ok? I know I should drive it to a transmission place and have them check it out but didn't want to mess it up anymore than it already is. I did call and check prices on rebuilding it. Any help will be much appreciated! I forgot to say that the truck has 153000 miles and runs and drove just fine until this. Thank you everyone

I'm not a transmission expert, but I suspect that they will need more information in order to help, like what kind of truck, engine, transmission, model year...

Your right I forgot to add that. It's a 2002 f150 with a 5.4L as far as the transmission goes its the smaller of the two that ford made for that year. I'm not sure what its called or anything.

No matter what you find or are told here, in addition to your efforts, find a reliable shop that knows your transmission. Ask for a reference or two, satisfied customers etc.

Fix your oil in the radiator thing yet?

Good luck with it.

Your problem could be as simple as a failing MLPS switch,( Manual Lever Position Sensor ). Sometimes they get hot and tell the computer you selected a lower gear and the computer will downshift the transmission.

Someone with a good scanner can catch this if they know what to look for.

Unfortunately the switch won't cause the whining noise.

I second the idea of finding a good shop to give it a good check, some will even do that for free.
