Two radiators?

Right now I'm flushing my cooling system/changing t-stat/etc. I'm going to pull my radiator out and clean it and I noticed there is a smaller radiator that sits in front of it. You can see it through the grille. What is this for? Can't find anything about it in the Haynes. '94, 4.9 auto with AC.

Some of the fins look pretty dented. Problem or no? AC blows cold but noticibly taxes the engine when run for too long.

Factory transmission cooler is inside the engine coolant radiator, it's the A/C condenser.

Beef: take some needle nose pliers and straighten the fins, just be gentle. Make sure it's not clogged with dust or other foreign objects like bugs. If it's a truck you're going to keep for a long time, or do a lot of towing with, consider adding an additional transmission cooler. You can find generic coolers at the auto parts stores and just find a line to splice and run through the loop.

May be a later-model difference I've seen on the '94-'96 autos I've worked on. It's a mess when you have to pull the radiator, the tranny lines have to be disconnected too.

It looks like this:

Flex-a-lite® - Ford F-250 1986-1992 TransLife™ Transmission Oil Cooler

My tranny always seems to want to be in limp mode which I've heard can happen when it gets hot. Should I replace this thing? Mine looks like crap to be honest. But then, my whole cooling system seems to have been neglected/abused by the previous owner.

My 96 has both types of transmission oil coolers. Line leaves the transmission, runs up to the radiator side tank, then to the external cooler, then back to the transmission.

Beef, if your tranny is in limp mode you should have a code stored. Check for it, and let us know.

You could be looking at the A/C condenser. I believe yours also has a small power steering cooler (about 6"x12" if I remember right). Not sure what models had both transmission coolers (one in the radiator, and one stand alone cooler), but it's possible you're looking at that. I think only diesels, 460s, and 5.8s came with stand alone transmission cooler in that generation but I'm not completely sure of that.

Straighten the bent fins gently with some small pliers and clean any debris out with a little compressed air or a water hose.

Not sure what your code is, but I'm sure someone on here knows.
