Hello, hopefully someone will be able to help me through my issue. I have a 2005 F250 5.4L with about 30k miles. The last several months I have been getting error code P0340 - Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Bank 1 Sensor 1. The truck seems to run fine. Nothing out of the ordinary. I need to get my smog done and this is the only thing holding me up.

For some background I have noticed a ticking noise almost since it was new but it was always very slight. The last couple of times I towed my trailer I notice under heavy load (up hill) the ticking noise is fairy bad. I though it might be a lifter but then found out that the phase adjusters for these motors can sound like that and its nothing too concerning.

So to try to clear the error I have changed the passenger side forward cam position sensor, changed the oil and added a quart of Marvels Mystery treatment to try and clear out any clogged oil passageways. and cleared the error several times, but it always comes back after several miles.

I have been reading extensively about the phase adjusters and feel I could tackle the job but am not sure this is my problem yet. I guess I'm just looking for confirmation before I lay down 400-500 for the phasers, or 700+ for phase lockers and programmer, etc.

Is there at least some kind of quick fix to get me through smog then tackle this issue when it cools off and I have extra cash? I don't drive the truck often but there are times I need it available.
