TTB Axle & Diff Removal

I want to change my R&P ratio, which means I have to yank the carrier out of the driver's side beam.

I rebuilt the whole TTB awhile back (during Y2K--Jeez--was that 13 years ago? ACK!), and interestingly, I find I just don't really need that 4.10 any more.

It is my only vehicle, and I do need it to go to work on a Monday morning...so I gots to plan this just right so I can do this in a weekend .

Is is possible to:
1. Remove the axles without pulling the spindles? In other words, pull the pig, yank the C-clip on the one side, and slide the axles out?

2. I understand that I will have to remove the circlips holding the stub axles in the hubs; with axles and pig gone, can I then reassemble the manual hubs, repack the bearings, and drive the thing w/o axles'n'pig while I set up the center section?

Reading through the Ford manual, they have me pulling the knuckles, calipers, spindles yada yada but I really don't think all that is necessary; I may be wrong...there's always the First Time.
