What do I have?
What I think I have is a 1958 F100 4x4 292 w/4 speed. It is a red and white styleside.
Serial # F10J8P17708 (gets kicked back as an invalid VIN)
F10 = F100
J= engine code....unknown
8 = model year...I assume 1958
P = assembly plant...Philly?
17708 = consecutive order #....it was the 17708th truck off the line that year
WB 118 (I know that means its wheelbase is 118 inch)
Color Code.....E (The only thing I can find says it's colonial white and not two-tone)
Date...11 (I assume that means it was made in November
Trans...F and F.......I don't know
Max weight and net HP/RPM are self explanatory
DSO...2843...it was the 2843rd special ordered truck that year
I tried to go online and add the truck to my insurance but the serial # gets kicked back. That is the # that the title shows as the VIN, so the PO was able to register/title it with that #. I'm hoping to not have any issues come Monday when I can call the insurance company and then try and register the truck.
Thank you in advance for any help.
Serial # F10J8P17708
F10 = F100
J = 223ci 6Cyl 1BC Carburetor 1957-58 (C is the code for 292)
8 = 1958
P = St. Paul, MN
17708 = Sequence number
WB118 = 118" wheel base
E=colonial white
11= usually the is a letter for the month and a number for the day. (11E would be May 11)
F = Borg Warner Model AS88 T-98A 4 Speed Manual Transmission.
DSO = domestic special order number
Looks like it got an engine transplant during it's life.
It's definitely a y-block. I don't know what size though.
I've got the T98-1r transmission and a Spicer model 24 transfer.
The 9" rear has 3.89 gears.
Front diff has 3.92's. The tag says C4TA-B which means its from a 64-65 F100.
F10J8P17708: F10 = F100 / J = 223 1V I-6 / 8 = 1958 / P = Twin Cities MN Assembly Plant / 17708 = 1958 Numerical Sequence of Assembly, the trucks specific serial number.
W.B. 118" Wheelbase / COLOR E: Colonial White (if factory tu-toned, there would be two color codes) / MODEL code omitted / DATE 11:
/ TRANS F: Warner T-98 4 Speed Manual Transmission / AXLE code omitted / GVW omitted / DSO: 2843.1959 was the first year FoMoCo offered factory installed 4WD in F100/250's.
So, this means your 1958 is a 4WD conversion and with a front axle code of C4TA-B, it was done by a previous owner, using a Dana 44F from a 1964 F100.
11 does not refer to November, it refers to the day the truck was assembled. You omitted the letter that follows 11: A = January, M = December, the letter I is skipped.
There's only a DSO code on these trucks if they were Domestic Special Orders. This refers to the fact that per the purchasers orders, something special was installed after the trucks left the assembly line.
Could be a special body or a 4WD conversion, or who knows as FoMoCo THREW AWAY the records decades ago. If something failed, there would be no parts listed for it in the truck parts catalog.
So, the dealer contacts FoMoCo with DSO code, FoMoCo looks up the order number, passes the info back to the dealer where the parts can be found. Same DSO system used today.
