carter 1 barrel issues, continued...

so, forthose of you who are following, i am STILL having issues with my carter 1 barrel on Clyde, my 1981 F150 with a 300, auto, 2wd.

I had the carb rebuilt, they did a nice job, bead blasted everything, re-bushinged the throttle shaft, and i dropped the carb on, tuned it, and was set. I drove the truck daily for 2 weeks straight, getting an average between 16 to 18 mpg. i was pleased.

One day, leaving work, i got about a block away from work, the truck acted like it was choking, and i pulled over to a nearby parking lot. As i opened the hood, i was greeted with fuel running down the side of the carb and down the manifold. after putting the truck on the trailer ( i hate putting the truck on the trailer, btw, its humiliating) i got it home, plucked the carb, and sent it back to the carb guy. he went and gave it once over, and gave it back a week later with a few new gaskets. Bolted it on, same luck. he came, watched it act up on the truck, and tore it apart that night, still acting up. He decided to take it back with him, completely rebuilt it, and here i sit, with it acting up yet again.

So, my carb guy is flustered, and im frustrated with a truck that i cannot drive. I wired the choke plate wide open, to make sure there is no possibility of the choke flopping shut, creating issues.

so, anyone have any ideas, smart remarks, or other suggestions? im kinda stumped....

What is it doing now ? excess fuel running out all over the place ? What is your fuel pressure ? What type of fuel pump ? If fuel is " running over " you have a needle/seat issue , float level issue , or too high fuel pressure . Last I would think , a porous carb body that needs replaced .But.... without seeing it in person.. just a guess . Good luck , hope it helps !

fuel is running out of the top bowl vent. it will run for approx. 20 seconds, then flood out. fuel pump has not been verified for pressure, it is a factory replacement pump from NAPA, about 8 months ago.

I was thinking about a needle or float issue, but i have no clue on the inside of this carb and its workings. I did a few holleys a number of years ago, but i tore this one apart, discovered its nothing like a Holley, and had my carb guy go through it.

I think I explained my experience back in '69 wherein a tank of bad gas did exactly that to my Holley. Anyway, if it isn't too high of pressure then it may be something in the tank, something gooey that causes the needle to hang up. (I'm assuming your carb guy has already ensured that you are running a good filter so it isn't grit.)

i put on a clear, rebuild able glass fuel filter on it, so not only am i filtering the fuel, i can also visually check the condition of the fuel itself.

Anyone know what fuel pressure my pump should be putting out?

W/o looking it up, the Edelbrocks like below 6, but the stock pump can put out something like 8 psi - if I remember correctly.

You will need an old school gauge to read these pressures . A injection pressure gauge will be no use at these low pressures .

Put a tee in the line between the pump and the carb.

Wow , some adapting , reducers , hook to fuel line , good to go . Years since I used it that way ! Test pressure at pump outlet , should be self regulating , if out of spec there is a problem .
