Tell me about cleaning the underside of these beasts. My '55 F100 looks like it lived in a barn and was driven on a dirt road all it's life. Not doing a full up restoration or anything like that just want to touch it up a bit mechanically and cosmetically and drive it. Do I need to soda/sand/water blast this stuff off the entire underside and then paint or will removing it just encourage the metal to rust?
If your not taking the body off I would pressure wash it since sand blasting is very messy. My suggestion would be to pressure wash, clean the frame up with some form of abrasive like a grinder with a wire brush attachment or just a wire brush to knock off the loose rust, then coat it with something like a por-15.
It won't hurt to do this, even if you don't cost the frame. All that old dirt can keep moisture in it and rot the frame that way, so I would get as much out as you can.
I'd pressure wash it and if you have access to a needle gun ( like what's used for descaling welds ) they do a very good job of cleaning off rust, even the fine rust. Then use por15 products
A little time with a a wire brush or wire wheel - wear eye protection! - will do a tremendous amount of good. The pressure washing is a fine idea - unless you have a lift, getting access with a wash gun can be problematic.
The pressure washer is the way to go. Highest pressure you can get. 4000psi. after that i would spray it with a degreaser like purple power. Wire brush any spots with heavy dried grease. Then re pressure wash. Let dry completely then coat with por15 or what i use kbs. Kbs come in a few colors which i fine better. Kbs also has a liquid blast you use before the kbs rust seal. Good luck and enjoy your truck
