f150 knocking

hey guys I have a 2008 fx4 with 75000 km it runs great but when I go on a long ride up hills or tow my trailer it acts up only when I get to my destination. the engine will run really rough and knock loudly seems only when I use reverse or sometimes park (and oil pressure in dash looks good),and if I shut ignition off and restart it no problems till I make engine work hard again.
Thanks in advance for reading this I appreciate any help

Mine makes the same noise only while idling when the engines up to temp. How much do they go for and how hard are they to change?

I think they are about 65 bucks each and are easy to install. The driver side needs the intake plumbing and power steering reservoir moved out of the way. Pull off the connector, remove seal and one bolt. It has been a while since I have done one but they are easy.

On the 2008, do you have to remove the valve covers?

Nope. Unplug the wire pop out the rubber plastic boot and remove 1 screw. The VCT pulls out Careful not to tear the boot

It is a solenoid valve that controls the flow of oil to the cam phaser position. This advances or retards your cam timing. It is located on the front of each head. You can see the passenger side one at the front of the valve cover. It has a plug about 1/12" inches in diameter with wires coming out

I tried to remove the gasket and there's just no way I see too pop it out of the valve cover without destroying it. I'm gonna remove the valve covers. Are the valve cover gaskets reusable?
