2003 6.0 EGR, OR EGR Delete
Hey guys, It's been a while since I have been on the boards. Since then I have picked up a 2003 F-350 with a 6.0. I have been scanning and reading some of the threads about issues and maintenance on these engines and am learning a bit. I don't have a lot of time to go through everything right now so I figured I would ask a couple questions and hopefully get some answers or pointed in the right direction, or to the right thread.
Basically from everything I have read and been told, it sounds like I am having an EGR issue. I am getting a little white smoke on start up, nothing bad, and then a little bit during operation. When I am accelerating when the truck has not been in operation for a little while I get a little bit of white smoke and hesitation, then as fast as it started it clears up and the truck takes off and acts as normal. Other than this issue it runs, starts and drives very well.
I have been told to just go with an EGR delete. I've read all the disclaimers and so on and big deal. As far as operation, what are the pro's and con's of going with a delete? I'm still debating on going the delete route, or just replacing the EGR valve and keeping it as is.
Another question I have regards daily driver performance. Are there any simple add-ons to aid every day performance? From what I read, stick with the stock air filter. Wondering if there is anything else I can do. I don't want to get crazy. So far the 6.0 has been good to me and I want to keep it that way.
Thanks gang!

If you live in an area that does emissions testing, you don't have much choice, you have to install another EGR cooler.
I'm new to Diesels, but from reading your symptoms it sounds like you'll be replacing the oil cooler which caused the egr cooler failure along with a new EGR Cooler.
Have you removed the EGR valve to check for the presence of moisture either on the valve or in the hole? If there is, then your EGR cooler has failed. You will need to replace the oil cooler and the EGR cooler AFTER performing a thorough flush of the system. A thorough flush is not fill with distilled water and drain, fill again and drain. There are steps with Restore and Restore Plus or VC9 (Motorcraft Coolant Iron Cleaner)
Wait for the guys who can really help you and ask lots of questions after reading.
