I have a 1995 f250 4x4 5.8l e4od and I would like to replace the cam for a little more power and when I research it on here I get like 2 to 3 different cam option. The cam I'm think of is the comp cam 35-512-8 which is a computer friendly, Cause I have to pass smog or is there one that is better than the other? also I researched headers with the egr tube connector but can only find shorty's. should I stay with shorty's or should I go long tube, but will long tube's have the port or will I have to have one welded on? I want to go the easiest way possible. I'm the kind of guy that prefers to be told if you want more you need to use this or not use that. My plan is cam and headers. If I left something out power helpful please let me know. Thank you in advance for the help
The Comp 35-512-8 is a good cam but it's specs would essentially be the same as the stock cam with 1.7 rockers so I suggest you do that instead.
You're in Cali so exhaust systems are a bit of a problem, I don't think there are any longtubes that are officially CARB legal even though some members here from California have used them and got through SMOG tests with them.. maybe they knew somebody. Technically long or short tubes won't make any difference to the tailpipe emissions but you can't use the factory cats or cats in the factory location with them and that causes trouble for some. There are aftermarket Y pipe assemblies that will work with shorties and there are shorties with the EGR connector on the front tube for the 5.8 motor. The only issue will be the AIR injection system the HD trucks are equipped with, it's different than what is on the LD trucks so those headers and Y pipe won't have connections for the tube that goes across the back of the engine, so you'll have to do some fabrication or use the LD tube that connects to the back of the cylinder heads instead.
Conanski thank you for the reply, to clarify I should stay with the stock cam and just up grade the rockers to 1.7's. With the exhaust I'll have to get the shorty's and have a shop put in a semi custom piping, Is this correct?
Yes stock cam with 1.7 pedestal mount rockers, the only mod sometimes necessary for these is to clearance the oil baffles in the valve covers, but it depends upon the brand some will clear.
You can buy an aftermarket Y-pipe that will fit the truck, magnaflow and few others make them just go to Summit Racing and search for "catalytic converter" for an F-series truck.
