grinding my cam....any changes needed?

grinding my cam....any changes needed?

i just took my stock '79 302 cam from my f-100 in to be ground into an RV cam, sinice it has a reduced base circle, and the lifters are sitting lower, would i need to make any changes..eg. longer pushrods? anything you can tell me would be great. Plus anything you can tell me about an RV cam..i was going to get a set of headers too, what kind of power do you think that would produce over stock?

Don't really have any answers only a question. What is the benefit from having your original cam reground to an rv cam verses buying a new rv cam and not having to worry about changing pushrods? Crane and CompCams both sell rv cams for $100. That couldn't be much more expensive than having a cam reground.

Yes your gonna need longer pushrods, and no one can tell you for sure exactly what length your gonna need, it's something that your gonna have to measure to get it right. FWIW I agree with ronclark, buy a new cam for what flat tappet cams cost it's not worth the regrind, and there is a lot of choiices already done up ready to run that don't require modifying stuff. If you were dealing with a high dollar roller cam that you wanted to get to be a little less radical then maybe but not on a stock cam.

Go to www.compcams and go to the online catalog. Find pushrod geometry pages 306 and 307. Click on it and read it. This should help you with your question.

I also am wondering why you are going to have your cam reground. There are so many cam manufacturers that make quality cams and do a lot of research and development.

thanks guys, new cams where a lot cheaper than i thought at first...so i went with a new melling RV cam
