my '95 has a 4" suspension lift and 33" (285/75r16) tires.. Also have a 4.9 with a mazda 5 speed, and 3.55 gearing. If I had a couple grand laying around, it would have 3.90's or 4.10's front/rear with detroit true-trac's at each end
I'm running 33's with no lift on my '85, I had to fold the inner lip of the wheel well to keep it from hitting the tires on really rough trails but other than that, they fit great. I've got a 300, C6 and 3.55's. I've been averaging 15 mpg but I drive it in town a lot.
Big Ugly, just curious , how much did your gas mileage suffer and what are you getting at highway mileage .
TR
When I first lifted it I was driving around 19 miles one way, mostly gravel roads, cruise set on 50 in 4th gear (keeps the rpm at about 1800). I was averaging 14-16.. Last time I checked I was getting 12-13, mostly in-town driving at 35. I am now driving around 20 miles one-way again, but have not checked my mileage with that truck. I have been driving my car to save on fuel expenses (broke college student). I would suspect highway mileage on a long trip to be 15-18, with cruise set on my pickup at 65 mph, my engine is turning right around 1800 in 5th gear. As long as it was nice, flat ground, mpg would be fairly optimal. As we all know, it's not a perfect world. Like I said earlier, I would really like to regear to either 3.90's or 4.10's.. 3.90's would keep the factory carrier. My truck feels gutless to me now, but it is drivable.. It is similar to having 3.08 gearing now, which really sucks.. Also, my other truck is a '74 with a 429 thunderjet, so I don't feel any of the measly power my '95 makes..
Lifted my pos. Actually i put alot of work in it. I run 37s with 4.56 gears and a np435 granny. I can pull alot, good power and i even got bad compression in one cyl. Top speed is well 65 ish lol. Good fun off road this summer. Debating on whether or not to fix the bad valve or swap to a 351 though.
Big-ugly your truck is big but not ugly! It looks sweet! 4" with 33s is the best look and all around set up IMO.
I couldn't imagine running 33s with 3.55s and a 4.9 tho.. I got stuck trying to turn around on a basic country trail today with mine and I've only got 31s. Locked into 4wd and the 4.9 just didn't have the grunt, total humiliating.
Quincy in my experience beware and make sure you have the gearing for the bigger rubber with the 4.9.

Thanks for the compliment! The name "big-ugly" was actually the name of my '89 f150 that my dad now owns.. he uses it to hold a camper in the back and pull his fishing boat to the lake. I was daily driving the '89 when I created my account here at FTE, so the name doesn't fit any of my vehicles now.. unless you count my '74 highboy, but there is no such thing as an ugly highboy

Right now I have a 3.08 which I really hate. The plan so for is to go with 3.73s maybe 4.10s. How is towing with your truck?
Quincy- I got my "new" 95 a few months ago (only 80k original miles) and haven't pulled anything nor do I plan to very often. I think the 3.55s would do alright and still be decent on the highway with a modest weight being towed. The reverse gear in these Mazada manuals is way too high tho.
My personal opinion is the 4.9 is simply too weak on power for a full sized truck. This engine really broke my heart and I didn't expect much! I still haven't pulled codes to see if there is an issue with mine but no dash lights are on, it looks to be in very good shape and my friend who is a mechanic drove it and said the power is all that can be expected.. Big disappointment for me, so much so I actually hope there is something wrong with it that I am missing.
Big ugly, now I get it! I totally agree -ain't no such thing as an ugly high boy, my favorite of all!

This..
I disagree that the 4.9 is too weak for a fullsize truck. The good 'ol inline 6 makes plenty of power for a truck, it is just not a fast engine. Start hooking some good sized loads to your truck, you might surprise yourself as to how easy that 6 cylinder will move those loads around. Mine did great before I lifted it/added larger tires.. Now I would like to regear and add lockers/limited slips.
