Cold water temp.

Hi all. I am having trouble getting the engine to warm up in my 64. 292 f600. Have had a complete engine rebuild and brand new 4 core rebuilt original radiator after a drive the temp gauge hardly moves and the radiator is only slightly warm.
Its worse in winter and a little better in summer I was thinking of putting a cover in front of the radiator? is it practical to use a shutter style cover as used on some of the bigger trucks? any thoughts welcomed or photos. thanks Brian.

Do you have a thermostat in the engine? And yes, in the past cardboard was used a lot to heat up the old trucks.

HI. yes I have installed a thermostat to the correct setting, you will find this hard to believe but I have have spent over 12K on the engine alone its a show pony may be it needs 7 ton up a 4 mile steep hill and see what happens.

It would seem to me that if you installed a thermostat and you can detect when it opens by observing the water level and flow thru the radiator then I would question the accuracy of the gauge and/or sending unit???

The one 65' I drive all the time, has a 352 and the optional heavy duty radiator. It has an electric fan. Even in 3 digit temps, that fan will only come on if I'm setting in traffic. And only for a short time. There is so much air space around the motor in these trucks and these blocks and heads have large water passages. I run a 180* thermostat. A friend of mine up north uses card board in the winter. Years ago, I used cardboard in my fat fendered Studebaker pick up. And it even had the 'factory' 292 Hemi in it. See if anyone picks up on that....

Use an infrared thermometer on the thermostat housing. I bet you'll find it's right about where it needs to be.

If your sender is in the factory location, and everything is accurate, it will indicate about 20 degrees less than the temp at the thermostat. This is because coolant still needs to move to the front of the engine and pass over 3 more combustion chambers and absorb some more heat.
