I have a 90 ranger with a 2.9 and the other day I flushed
the cooling system to get ready for winter weather and noticed
that the temp gauge moves up to normal and holds there for
a few seconds then drops back down to cold. I'm thinking I have
an air pocket in the system. I need help on purging the system.
If you check everything, and make sure there is no air in the system, but the temp gage continues to act funky, it could be the new thermostat. I currently have one that doesn't open smoothly & gradually when running temp is reached. It sticks shut until temp is exceeded by a few degrees, then pops wide open, causing the temp gage to drop drastically. It will do this for awhile, until the water in the radiator is too warm to cause the sudden drastic drop. I don't think it's safe for 2 reasons. First, it could stick shut permanently with no warning. Second, on an extremely bitter cold day, you could have -20 degree water suddenly rushing into a hot engine. YIKES!! Not good. I want to replace it ASAP. If indeed your temp behaviour doesn't straighten out, I'd recommend you do the same. A couple bucks for another stat is cheaper than replacing a cracked motor.
I have the same problem with my 1990 Ford Ranger with the 2.9 in it. I tried replacing the thermostat and flushing the coolant but it still acts funny even after having the coolant flushed at a garage by a "qualified" technician. I need help also!
