I bought a 1994 Motor Home that is built on a Ford E-350 chasis with a 7.5 liter gas engine. I am looking for a solution to a problem that just cropped up.
With the engine running, all gagues read normally however I hear a metalic thump ot "tink" that causes the voltmeter to drop and then come right back up. To me it sounds like a relay or solenoid that keeps disengaging causing the voltmeter to fluctuate. It happens on a fairly consistent 20 -30 second interval. I am thinking that it could be a bad voltage regulator which I understand Ford still mounted outside of the alternator.
If anyone else has any thoughts, they would be greatly appreciated.
94 would not have an externally regulated alternator, it would be internal. IIRC 93 or 94 was when they switched to the 3g alternator.
it may be that some electrical load is turning on at that interval. it would be wise to use a voltmeter to see where the voltage is with that load on vs off. from there, we can decide if you have a problem or not - it sounds to me like something is just turning on and off, possibly the air conditioner, maybe something else. and if voltage remains in an acceptable range, then all is well.
