Last time I checked this problem, I had the owner of the truck in the truck, engine running and transmission in first gear with his foot on the clutch, and brakes, I had him slowly let the clutch pedal out while holding strong pressure on the brake pedal, while I watched from the side with the hood open, It was easy to see that the drivers side motor mount was broken. Then I had him do the same thing with the transmission in reverse, also easy to see the passenger side mount was broken also.

Ah. That makes sence. The engine moving around not the tranny. The engine twisting would alter the angle of the shifter.
A jack can be used, but you must be VERY careful, it is possible for the engine to fall off of the jack while your hands are working on the part that will stop the engine from falling anymore, (crushed hands would really hurt, and they are kind of needed to get the jack in place again) replacing the mounts is not a real tough job. Easier to remove the nut of the mount,s stud with the engine resting on it, the engine will keep the broken rubber from spinning while the nut is removed.
I understand why, maybe I should be doing one more often . I'm still learning a lot as I go and spotting things like this can be hard. I wish I had a perfect truck to compare to, sometimes I just don't know if something is wrong.
It is clear that you have a broken motor mount or more than one. Burning rubber as you first posted could lead to a disaster.
Replace all three mounts. One at a time. Put one in, go to another, jack, replace, move on. If you try to do more than one at once you will have a helluva time getting things to line up.
No, not a bad job. A Saturday morning for all three mounts with $75 in parts and a jack and a block of wood between the jack and metal.
Go for it.

Where is the 3rd mount? I only found one on either side. O'Reillys has em for about 5 bucks each but only left and right.

That OK... it's part of the learning curve and so long as you're learning, doing your homework/research, and are informed then there is nothing to "fear".
Patience young padawan.....We all started at our own version of the beginning.
Exactly as Hio put up in his last post. I pay him a fee to follow me around and correct my ambiguities and errors. Knuckleheads like me refer to the trans mount as the rear motor mount.
I would be careful with a $5 part. You may be into China. I would suggest TRW if they are still around or a Ford part. ND will wander in about that.

2X CougarJohn BIG time. You buy China mounts and you better do a 1968 Chevy trick. CHAIN the engine down also!
