Howdy All!
My neighbor has a (7-July) 2000 Expedition, 5.4 90+K (when the numbers want to light on the odometer). I think I am in the right place, please move if need be...I'll find it. No CELNo Stored codes
I have witnessed: Starts and runs fine....over and over. Once the vehicle is running, it runs fine...it will never shut off w/o turning it off.
I have also witnessed no start at all......just cranks. When it was in the crank-no-start mode, I shot it with a VERY little bit of Starting Fluid with NO CHANGE, just crank-no-start.
I have NOT witnessed but have been told: sometimes no crank!
AND sometimes run but at a very low idle until shuts off.
All these symptoms seem to be "the luck of the draw" Any symptom can happen at anytime. It doesn't matter if it is hot (operating temp) or cold. It doesn't matter if it is wet or dry. There is no common thread.
My neighbors are very good people and I would like to do what I can to get them going (going with confidence). When they use it someone has to stay in the vehicle while its running so the other can go in the store or whatever it is that they are doing.
I am hoping this may be a common problem on these and you all can steer me/us to the culprit.
Thanks!
Cope
thanks alloro! I have a hard time grasping the plugs or wires for that matter b/c when it does start it runs like a champ. HOWEVER.....
I forgot (just learned) some new info. The vehicle has a factory alarm AND an after factory remote starter (thats been in for about 8 years). I am really at a loss
Just got back from spending an hour in the parking lot of a local gym where the wife went to workout. She drove home from work (11-12mi) changed clothes and left 20 later. Drove to gym (3mi) and did a 45 minute workout. Went to leave and her Expedition wouldn't start. She says initially it started but died almost imediately. Additional tries were the same satrt then die imediately. Finally just crank and no start so she calls me. I get there and yep, cranks but wont start. I go under the hood, check for obvious connections lines fuses etc but all looks fine. I connect the OBDII and nothing reported. I gave up and had her call the tow We grab a quick bite from a local fast food and wait the estimated 45 min for the tow truck. At the time the tow should be there I go and try to start it. i cranked and applied 2 10% pumps on the throttle and it starts!
This is the second time in a month this has happened so we can't trust it...
All Ive done in the past 4 mo is replace #2 COP due to CEL and associated mis-fire code...
This sounds like like whats going on with my neighbors truck. I am going to talk to my buddy who was a FORD master mechanic for umpteen years. Whatever he tells me I will share with you.
Infact I will e-mail him this link. I doubt he will register (I could be wrong) and reply but like I said I will share his thoughts.
I kinda thought that too but during the crank-no-start event, I sprayed a little starting fluid in the intake but it still didn't fire. Also, woul;dn't it shut off from time to time?
I'd still test the fuel pump if for no other reason to rule it out. Another possibility is the resistor element inside the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) is cracked and making intermittent connection.
hmmm...i am not familiar with these vehicles at all, for starters. where can I find the TPS ...I mean what does it look like? When I find it what ohms should I get between the leads? I really appreciate any and all the help brother, thanks!
