I am considering purchasing a 2004 X Limited 4x4 6.0 PSD but a known issue is the overhead display is not functioning. Does anybody have any experiencing repairing this issue or is it a major undertaking? The rest of the vehicle appears to be in great shape, I'll perform a complete inspection and road test later this week when I have more time.
If all goes well ill drive it home. I'll post pics once I get it here.
If you like the rest of the vehicle, buy it. Don't let the overhead display stop you.
I bought my "one owner" from a retired couple who only used it to pull a golf cart trailer and transport grand kids twice per year ... it was in perfect condition inside and out... but the over head display did not light up.
It was one if the easiest fixes I have ever performed. If I had let that one thing keep me from buying it, I would have later kicked myself when I found out how easy it was!
There are a few write-ups online of how to fix this issue. I found one with great pics and all. It has to do with a couple of solder joints cracking and coming loose on the circuit board.
In a nutshell:
Drop the over head console
Take out a few screws to get the circuit board out
Re-solder a couple of capacitors back onto the board
Put it all back together and watch it light up!
I've been trying to figure out what to put in place of mine because I'm contemplating tearing it out. It works fine, but frankly I'm tired of looking at something that lies worse than the government.
My OH display is very dim, and difficult to read during the day - is there a fix for that?
Same fix.
Re-solder the capacitor joints on the circuit board. You can just use a pencil tipped solder iron (really pointy one) and barely touch the solder joints and sometimes that causes the joint to "flow" back together like it should be. If that doesn't work, then just a small dab of new solder on the joint will do it.
It's all about the current flow to the digital display.
I had the same problem with my 2000 EX and re-soldered the two resistors myself. that was last year and they're still holding. When you get the OH computer out as James described and actually open it, it will be the little black rectangular resistors behind the screen. Bad design, light surface solder. Easy fix.
