I have an 04 F250 and every now and then the overhead console starts reading bizarre numbers and the fuel level gauge goes to empty and the low fuel light comes on. After a few hours the fuel gauge returns to normal and the readings on the overhead console change back. Has been happening a couple times a month, not figuring its any huge deal just pretty annoying. Thanks for any help
I don't know if your problems indicate something more serious or not but my wife drives a 01 Focus wagon and the stereo would display really weird characters or not display anything at all and the Seek buttons didn't work. I took it totally apart and looked around to see if I saw anything suspicious. I didn't so I put it back together and now the display works fine. I figure there must have been some connectors not making good contact and the process of unplugging and plugging back must have fixed the bad connections. The Seek buttons still don't work but I have some other things I want to try for them.
If you are comfortable with it maybe take it apart, unseat and then reseat any connectors you find. Just a shot in the dark though.
Mine does the same thing, in fact the compass part has been out for the better part of two years (very low on the priority list). I seem to remember searching on here that it's caused by a short/bad connection in the overhead's display circuit board. It was 48F in KC Saturday...yet the overhead was saying 4F and I was getting 12mpg. I say it was a little off the mark.

Mine works but the compass is about 270degrees off and sometimes doesn't show anything. I've read that there are three chips in that unit and if one or more become unseated then the read-out goes wacky. I'm going to tear into mine today if I can but when I do I'll take pics and post 'em up.

Yeah, my compass has been blank for at least a year...the last time I remember seeing it work, it was at least 180 degrees off which direction I was headed. That will be excellent if you tear into yours today and get it fixed.
Yea I had resoldrred the chips to the board a few months back when the display went out completely, I guess ill open it back up, what about the fuel level gauge dropping to empty when the console starts acting up. Wouldn't think they would be connected but they both always do it at the same time

If your fuel gauge is going to empty, and you are getting the low fuel message, I don't think your problem is in the overhead. You probably have a bad fuel level sender in the tank.
Mine is bad. It has a dead spot in the middle of the tank. Not always, but often around the half empty mark it will suddenly drop to dead empty on the fuel gauge, and I get two DTC set. Luckily I know it is not really empty, and when it gets down to 1/4 tank or so it starts working again. I don't have the overhead computer functions.
Check your codes and see if P0460 and P0464 are set, or somewhere in that range. The CEL will not come on, so you need something to read the codes.
Also, try checking the electrical connector on top of the tank. Might just be loose. It could also be a bad gauge cluster, but lets hope not.

A friend of mine had a Dodge that was doing this, pulled the console down and it was full of water!
