new guy here

Hi All, Just wanted to introduce myself and say Hi. I'm new to this forum and have recently purchased a 49 F1 w/ 226 H series engine. I'm sure I'll be needing some advice and pics along the way. I'm not new to car restoration and have in my stable a 49 Ford Convert ( which I made into a "Sportsman", a 49 Ford Wagon, and 47 Merc Town sedan.
The PO of this truck did some work on it, most of which has to be redone. He told me it was running well a year or so ago when he last had it running. I never believe that story. When I did a compression check I had 4 cylinders at 0 so I pullled the head and manifolds and found paper towels stuffed in the manifold openings and in the head. I geuss they forgot to take them out!.
Anyway I got that straightened out and replaced the exhaust valves and 1 intake valve and now have about 90 PSI in all 6 so I think it should fire up and run fine.
Here is a pic of my firewall stamping which is supposed to tell me the original color I think. Can someone figure this out for me
Thanks--I'll be back

Hello, I know your question will be answered shortly, but Im not the one with the answer. I did however wanted to give you a warm FTE welcome. This is a great site with a lot of folks that not only are nice and friendly, but have the answer to just about any question you may have about these old trucks.

I don't know the codes either, but welcome to the forum. We are pretty close as I am in Houston in the Heights. And also had issues with the work that the PO did, but no paper towels in the engine. Plenty of other strangeness though.

topmoo I think I need to get to know you

Topmoo
thanks for your response to my intro message.
I see you are a woodworker--Me too--although jast as a hobby, my real job before retirement was as a veterinary surgeon. Still, I feel I've done some neat things with wood.
Here's a pic of my 49 Ford convertible that I made into a Sportsman (My concept--Ford only made the 46-48, but this is what a 49 should have looked like)
I'd love to come by for a visit sometime and see your stuff
Bill

Welcome to FTE!

I believe Joe harleymsn has deciphered this code in post #6 of this thread https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...l#post11722851 as follows:

The firewall codes MNR9J729

M = Meadow Green

NR = Norfolk, Va.

9 - 9th day

J = September

729 = build number

Your stamp appears to be 2CH1E899. So I think that would make yours:

2 = I have no idea of a color code as a number. My reference starts with 1951 trucks

CH = Chicago plant

1 = 1st day of

E = June

899 = build number

Maybe harleymsn will chime in and clarify it for you.
