I was at a car show in Strathmore a few weeks ago and come across a nice looking 50 F1. I got to talking to the guy about the usual mods like independent suspension and power steering and such but then he showed me how he installed 4 cab mounts one each corner to tie down the cab. He explained that with the frame boxed from front to back there was no need for the cab to float. I have been considering this from the start and now seeing it I would like to go this route. BUT before I commit I would really like to hear your opinions. Will this work?
The stiffer the frame, the less the original cab mounts have to work. I have a fully boxed frame and I'm going to be using the original cab mounts. If it ain't broken....
I agree with the others. Ford spent literally a million dollars, in 1940's dollars, to redesign the cab on their trucks for more room and a better, more comfortable ride. There's no reason to waste all that and toss their work out the window. With a fully boxed frame I think I'd want even more the full floating cab to reduce the increased harshness he's induced.
You have very little movement of the front cab mounts anyway, just a thin rubber mount so on My 51(Homade) I made new rear mounts and used rubber donuts which are about 2 1/2 " and works great. I made the rubber mounts out of a roller on a boat trailer, you can buy the rollers at about any boat store. The can be cut with any power miter saw to the length according to the measurements needed. Allow 1/4 to 3/8" that the mount will squesse together. Works great for me and NO cab roll .
