I have a 6.0 diesel so the 6.8 is foreign to me. My buddy has a 6.8 and wants it to give him a little more power towing. Right now the truck is stock and he is not getting very good mileage towing his toyhauler. What kind of upgrades could he do to make things better. Gears, tuner, exhaust, intake??????? TIA
my 08 with 4:10's has a hard time breaking into double diget mpg. I once got 12.5 on a trip from mn to Il empty. Gears then a tune for a 99. It is just a thirsty beast. good friend had a 99, he out 419,000 miles on it too.
So would 4.10s help quite a bit?? And what kind of tune?? With the gears is he going to notice any mpg increase or just better power?? Also what is the best tranny cooler he could run to help with tranny temps??
mike at five star is your best tuning source. Not much of anything is going to improve the mpg. Lots os thread about gearing around here. For towing a lot of weight any gear is going to beat the 3:73. I would stay lower then 4:30 as 4:10 is not going to be huge change unless he running big tires. Smaller diameter tires is also an option vs a 2500 dollar gear change. Towing @ 70 mph I get 6-8 mpg depending on the wind. Thats at 22450 pounds GCVW.
With that eco tow tune can he still run 87 octane fuel still? And with 285/75R16 would you recommend 4.10 or 4.30???
The economy tow tune uses 87 octane. I can flat footed spin my 34" tall tires from a stop (w/4.10 gears) I only did that once to prove a point. This safe tune allows the use of 6 gears (two 4th gears) 24/7. I have gained almost 1 mpg while towing 8,500lb.
My 08 has a factory CAI and the exhaust manifold is improved over eariler years.
My '09 Lariat got 10.4 mpg towing a TT out and back to western KS against a heavy headwind and then up and down CO Rocky Mountain NP. Added an Airaid CAI and have a
Flowmaster II catback on order. Would love to break into the 11's+ or 12 even.
My speed was generally 65-75 mph.
