1978 Brocno EFI Conversion

I was tired of a carb and wanted to do something to my old bronco that, from my searching had not been done that many times, install fuel injection. I did a little checking into all of the "kits"-Holley, Fast EFI ect., they all seemed to have one thing in common, they were expensive. I decided to go the Megasquirt route due to the cost and being able to use parts from the junkyard to make it work. My fist stab at doing this was buying a complete engine out of an 1989 F250, I was going to switch the heads, the heads on efi 460s and carb'd 460s are different, my plan was to switch the heads and use the efi intake manifold, dist., and wire up the ecm. Turned out the efi heads were cracked, so went to plan "b". I sent my carb'd intake manifold out and had injector bungs and fuel rails made. Then I adapted the upper intake plenum to the carb manifold. The fuel system was pretty straight forward installed an electric fuel pump, supply line, return line, and pressure regulator. The rest of the wiring was also straight forward, coolant temp, air intake temp, dist. ground and signal, o2 sensor-used a wide band kit from Innovative Motorsports- coil ground, TPS. I also added a two speed electric fan so a couple of relays for that as well. I used the serpentine belt brackets, pulleys, but pulled half off a van so I could get the Saginaw p/s pump. This is pretty much where I am at now, as with most projects there are two parts that are always hard to find, time and money.

Thanks
Quinn

Quinn, great info! I'm trying to decide if I'm going to do EFI on my 67, with the 351 I robbed out of an 89 F-250. Didn't want to use the factory one, too much of a mess with the factory wiring.

Pat, that small block would be easier to get working that what I had to do with my 460. The wiring is not that difficult if you take it one circuit at a time, I disected the factory efi harness off the doner motor I bought and you end up only using about 1/2 the wires in the factory harness since you are getting rid of all the emissions controls. There is also a ton of performace parts available for small efi fords, and you can get it pretty cheap used. Check out MegaSquirt Engine Management Systems this is what got me thinking that I could add efi to my Bronco. If you decide to go this route and need a hand let me know I may be able to assist.

Thanks
Quinn

Thanks, I'll check that out! I'd rather have this decided before I get the engine done, since it will effect what cam I get.

79crewcab, is it the bracket or the actual pump that is hitting the steering gear?

both the bracket and pulley were hitting the steering gear. i notched out the bracket to clear but the pulley wont clear, i found in the 460 ford forum site a guy put a smaller pulley on but cant remember what the pulley came off of, if i put a smaller pulley on will it spin the pump too fast?? i found a pulley that might be the right diameter but it has a splined shaft so it would have to be machined to be able to press onto the ford pump, i am using the canister style pump, if you have any other ideas any help would be great
