Wiper Woes....

just sorting my 58 out, and trying to get her legal. It has an electric wiper motor out of something... not sure what. It las a little bracket with a post that comes off the motor . When I hooked the arms up to the motor, the wipers went waaaay off the side of the truck and made all sorts of racket. They were over-traveling. Upon review of some of the other linkages/transmissions on wipers I noticed a little L shaped clevis was missing and ordered one from Mac's. Got it today and connected it to the existing arm that came off the motor via the post on the existing wiper motor, and put the post through the clevis.. Not sure if what I did was right.. cause that didn't work too well either. My questions are, for those of you who have this Clevis part, does it have to bolt straight on to the motor? The other question is, does your motor go round and round in a clockwise motion or does it rock back and forth? I am having a hell of a time with this. Rather rebuild a carb.

If you have something that a PO jury-rigged in there and need to dump it, here's what I did to eliminate my vacuum wipers. I bought a wiper motor as used in my buddy's excavator cab. I had noticed it was a back and forth motor (intended for a single wiper arm). Research on the web showed them to be available in various degrees of sweep, as well as 3 different lengths of shaft. I cut the V shaped rocker arm off my vac wiper moror and welded it to a nut that fit over the knurled shaft on my new wiper motor assembly and fixed it with a set screw drilled and tapped into the side of the nut (1/2" ?). Now I had an electric back and forth motor that mimicked the vacuum's action. Mounting was easy using the strap that had secured the vac motor wih a couple of new holes. I was able to set the beginning and end of the swing by using the set screw against the knurled shaft. I suppose you could buy a kit made for this, but that would have been too easy, and I would have had to read the directions instead of making up my own..........Best case scenario is you have proper ford electric wipers and something is just haywire with the mechanism that's easily fixed. Just noticed Mr. Coffee is done with his morning's work. I hate these early morning 4:30 am starts with big city contractors and their silly deadlines.............

I'm not sure if this is relevant but 57 passenger cars use a back and forth type motor vacuum motor, I don't know if it's the same as the trucks. The common practice is to replace it with a 57 Chevy electric motor, it's a direct bolt on. It's cable actuated and one hot wire.

Just to throw something else in the mix, you could have vaccum linkage and that is different from electric. I use to have more hair before I tried to get my wipers going.

Gray hair is right! Finally got it half figured out. The existing clevis on unknown motor was removed, and retrofit clevis from mac's put on. Work well, but are a little asymmetric while they operate. My motor goes round, and doesnt rock back n forth... prolly why.

NumberDummy pointed out, in another wiper-related thread a few years ago, that Green Sales in Cincinnatti, has a whole slew of NOS wiper motors for our truck. For around 150 bucks or so, it's hardly worth trying to monkey something of unknown origin to fit.
