2003 4.6L windsor specs
I've always felt that the original engine was terribly underpowered for the size of the truck. I could never use the cruise control on the interstate because it would cost too much in fuel by constantly dropping out of overdrive even on the slightest of inclines with the only myself in the truck and completely unloaded.
My question is this. When I look up the specs on these engines, I get a lot different answers. One is "a 4.6L is a 4.6L". But according to many sites, the horsepower produced varies a little. Every site I've run across lists the crown vic 4.6L with 224 HP. Most sites that I can find list the 4.6L in my truck as having 231 HP. I did find one link that brings me to FTE's site that lists my engine as 220HP. Can anyone clarify this? I just don't want to install a weaker engine in an already underpowered truck.
Thank you,
The engine size is only 261 cu/inches and not a torque monster.
Page 167 of the owner manual under super crew shows two axle ratios for this year.
3:31 and 3:55.
If you have 3:31 it won't pull the truck weight as well as the 3:55 would.
I have a 2002 with 3:55 and have towed over the gross limit with amazing results for a small motor.
It pulls OD fine up to a point then down shifts.
The difference is only about 300 rpm out of OD and converter lockup.
A full downshift to 3rd jumps the RPM as much as 1200 rpm.
There is no magic torque to be found in a 4.6 swap.
Good luck.
