Need a new engine to replace the 4.6L in my 2000 Expedition 4x4. Any opinions on which one, besides stock, would be best and require the least modifications to install? Also, anyone know a good source for an engine and possibly an installer (Brighton, Michigan area)? Able to spend $3500 on engine and up to $1500 on install.
Currently looking at the following engine options:
It looks like I can get a new 5.4L DOHC Navigator engine for $3700 and a new 4.6L SOHC Mustang engine for $3300 from Corral.net (Mustang site). Engines are intake to oil-pan, except for A/C, starter, flywheel, alternator.
Any problems bolting either of these up to my existing transmission? I should have the 4R70W (truck is up at dealer so I can't check). I also have the towing package.
Did Ford use different cam profiles on Mustang 4.6 vs. a truck 4.6? I don't know the answer, but I wouldn't be surprised if Ford set up the truck engine for more low-RPM torque production.
Paul - You're probably right. I know the HP and Torque numbers are higher, but that's likely rated at a higher RPM (I'll have to look into it).
Zarillus - The 5.4 did get a different transmission, but I think I read that they have shared the less beefy of the two recently. Either way, I believe the 4.6 tranny is considered strong enough to handle the 5.4 SOHC engine (maybe not the Navigator DOHC). I generally don't tow that often, and when I do it's a small trailer.
It looks like I may give up on upgrading the engine, and just put another 4.6 back in. Nobody I've talked to is willing to make the swap to a Navigator 5.4 or a Mustang 4.6 due to the electronics/wiring issues. Maybe if I was offering to pay $10K, but I'm only willing to spend about $1500 for the installation labor. I would take it on myself, but it's my family's primary vehicle and I can't afford to have it down too much longer.
Yes, I don't think the Navigator 5.4 is compatible w/ my PCM.
Looks like I'm gonna have to give up my hopes of an upgrade with the engine swap, unless anyone has any good suggestions on how I can reasonably accomplish it.
The dealer wants $3300 for a remanufactured longblock and if I want my old engine back, they want $1000 core charge. Is there a better place for me to get the 4.6L engine than through the dealership so I can keep my old one to rebuild (for a reasonable core charge)?
