Hi all- just wanted to introduce myself. As of 3.5 weeks ago I am a new IDI owner. This is actually my first Ford truck and my first diesel. I am coming over from the dark side - GM trucks. I have been more and more interested in Ford trucks over the past few years and thought it was time to give one a try. So far, I'm very happy!
I have a 1991 F250 Supercab 4x4 XLT Lariat with E4OD. It has 227k miles. The engine is in great shape and the trans and transfer case were professionally rebuilt in the spring. After a bit of work, I have it running and driving really well.
I have been creeping here for a while. Thanks to everyone for all the great info! I used the site yesterday to get instructions to turn down my injection pump. Hopefully I will be able to provide useful info for others as I get to know the IDI better.
Welcome to Blue Oval family. Sounds like your on the right path with doing lots of research. Got any pics to share? I love seeing pics of these things as I feel each one has a different story to tell. I myself became a proud diesel owner a few months ago. Finally getting to drive it more.
Here it is! I do some towing for work so I have been putting it to use. The body is a bit rusty and the clear coat is gone. But the price was right and the drivetrain is solid. Most of the amenities work, too (now that I fixed them) - A/C, power locks, windows, cruise, etc. I've put about 2k miles on already doing some traveling between Ohio and Indiana. I'm really pleased with it so far.
And remember, don't ever be shy to ask any questions about it, even if it sounds like a stupid one to you, the only stupid questions are the ones never asked!
Also, just incase you haven't found out yet, as a new 7.3 owner, you will NEED to read through this, understand it and treat it.
Welcome to the Ford Truck family! Just one word of advise: take care of that rust as soon as possible. It will spread quickly at the point it appears to be at, especially the SuperCab rockers. Even most of the SCs around here are rusting there, and we have very dry air and there is no salt use in the winter. The fender arches are easy and don't tend to rot as quickly.
Welcome. I got my first diesel last Oct and so far I love it. Where in Indiana do you travel for business? I am about 15 minutes from the Ohio border by Ft Wayne.
I don't think the older ones have that foam. I remember a few years ago, there was a clean never winter driven super cab 91 IDI for sale near me, and I remember looking underneath, all clean shinny metal, and looking up and inside the super cab wall in a big hole at the bottom.
I think they only started putting that foam in the OBS Fords cause all my reg. cab Bricknoses have no foam, but my reg. cab 1994 F150 has that foam in the corners inside, and surprise surprise, cab is in great shape, corners are rotting from the inside!
Wow! Lots of great info. SCA test strips are on my short list, but I'm having a hard time finding them. The rust was pretty far down on the list, but it sounds like it needs to be bumped up in the timeline.
