where is the best place to get a high performance powersteering pump for my 02' f-350 powerstroke 4x4 c/c??
i have a 4in lift with 315/75R16's and with just going up that small amount of a tire the powersteering doesnt like to turn the tires when sitting still, and its kinda tricky when in tight spaces. i can make it, but my who is small doesnt have the strength to turn it like i can.
kinda funny i buy a ford because everything it tough on it. straigth axle, etc. but the damn powersteering pump. my dad and my father-in-law who all have the same size tires have the same problem.
But just realize that increasing pump pressure alone may not solve the problem. You may also need to upgrade the steering box, hydraulic hoses, and other steering components. Also, depending on year and original mounting, you might have to modify the pump mounting bracket.
You most likely have a plugged pressure bypass valve in your pump. The power steering pumps have a bypass valve in them that keeps the pump from blowing out seals at high RPMs. Over time crud builds up and these valves get stuck in the open position, meaning that the fluid is in bypass mode all the time, and until you rev the motor you don't have enough overall fluid flow to operate things properly. The sad thing is that even many remanufactured pumps don't fix this. Unfortunately the vasy majority of problems are due to poor overall design. There are a couple things people have done. One, is to take the valve apart and clean it, and while it is apart there is a tiny spring in side that they stretch to force the valve to stay closed longer. The second thing people have done if the spring mod is not enough is to enlarge a specific orifice that will let more fluid flow. Gotta be careful not to enlarge it too much though or it WILL blow seals. I will try and look around and see if I can find some data online that may show some pictures applicable to the SD pumps. If i can't find any I think I have a pump laying around somewhere I can strip apart.
