Opinions on 02 Excursion

Looking for a different tow vehicle. The 07 Expy EL just isn't cutting it. Found an 02 Excursion limited with a 7.3, 91k miles for sale locally. I had a 7.3 in my old truck and loved it. If I recall the 7.3 in the Excursion was set up a little differently. Looking for opinions anyone has on this truck. Thanks

If its been well maintained Buy it quick, they don't last... I searched for a low mile 2002-2003 7.3 for months. The ones I looked at in my market were crap. I finally gave up and bought a 05' 6.0.

The 02' has a few nicer trimmings than the 00' - 01's
Headlights, rear of front seats etc.

I went from an 07 Expy EL to an 04 Excursion and couldn't be happier.

Going strictly by the numbers my 07 Expy should be able to carry my 5 children and tow my RV. However with that you are right at if not over the maixinum capacity of the truck. I have the Reese dual cam WD hitch and the prodigy brake controller and even with that it was scary driving the truck. I think Ford greatly exaggerated the expys towing capability. On top of that the 5.4 is barely adequate handle the weight of the Expy. You add seven people and a trailer and your crawling up the highway.

Did you get a v10 or a 6.0 in your 04? I would be willing to spend the extra $$$ money to fix a 6.0 if I got it for the right price in the right truck

I got the 6.0 and have made a lot of (but not all) the precautionary steps to help keep it safe (see signature).

I tow a 7,500# trailer and the difference between it and the 5.4 Expy is night and day.

What does the CARFAX indicate?

What is the price?

What model? XLT, Limited or Eddie Bauer? 4WD?

What are you towing? Weight? Tongue weight?

It's 02 Excursion Limited 4x4, 7.3 with 91k miles, asking $21,000. I haven't seen it yet. I know all the common ailments: 7.3 oil pan rusts out, ball joints every 50k to 60k miles, tends to eat sway bars, along with all the spots Ford bodies like to rust at.

If I can close the deal I'll be using it to tow our 30'ft travel travel, which has a dry weight of about 6700 If my recollection is correct. By the time your heading down the road it's probably 8,000+. The Expy is scary trying to tow it. I have to go talk to this guy. I. Going to this guy. He's a dealer so I'm going to try and trade in the Expy on the excursion. He has an idea of what that 7.3 is worth so it will be an uphill battle.

The 02 will have much nicer seats and just look...cleaner if that even makes sense. If you know all the common problems with the 7.3L its the same as the Super Dutys. There's one for sale around me that I would die to get. Its got I think right around 100k on it but it looks mint and the interior is mint AND its the only 02 I've ever seen with the optional mid captains chairs. The only other 7.3L with the mid captains chairs I've ever seen was an early 03 EB.

You're going to be really irritated to find that you are over an Excursion's GVWR with 7 people and that trailer. IIRC, the Excursion GVWR is 9200#, and they weigh nearly 8000# empty. Add 800# of tongue weight and you only have 400-500# for passengers and cargo. This only matters if you wad the thing up, as it'll tow the load and behave just fine, but it's worth knowing up front.

Sounds like a great truck, if not a great price. It's about what I'd want for mine, though, so I certainly don't blame the guy.
