Door Seal Retainer

On the bottom of the doors to my 53 F-100 there was a strip of metal with a wavy edge spot welded on. It is referred to as the door seal retainer. The name gives me a pretty good idea of its purpose, but how does it work? Does the main weatherstrip for the door somehow engage this retainer strip? The retainer strips on my doors rusted away a long time ago, and I do not have a clear mental picture of how they work.

Mine are still there, but there was no seal in them when I bought it. I assume that a seal just slides from one end to the other, kind of like some house door thresholds. It is basically a flattened "C" shape.

Are they really necessary? I replaced my door bottoms and they are long gone.

According to Mac Parts, the wavy steel door seal retainer keeps the sponge rubber door seal from rolling and pulling itself off when the door closes. Without the retainer, the adhesive alone would have to resist the seal's tendency to roll.
